What gal doesn’t heart cute shoes? Designers and sisters Maryam and Marjan Malakpour literally “heart them” for their spring NewbarK collection.
As a stylist, I’m always looking for unique shoes for photoshoots, as well as fashionable and comfortable ones for my own busy feet. So, when I came across this fairly new shoe line from fellow stylists, it made sense that these two would transition into shoe design.
NewbarK is a luxury collection of handmade shoes and handbags, originally launched in 2009 by the Malakpour sisters. Crafted in an artisan factory in Los Angeles, NewbarK shoes and handbags exemplify a streamlined yet contrasting use of materials – leather, canvas, felt, suede and virtually no hardware, making these shoes chic, simple and modern.
You’ll heart these flats: they fold neatly into a small carrying pouch for the city girl on the go. With an aesthetic of Moroccan baboush meets Englishman’s leather slippers, they’re a sophisticated and stylish alternative to ballet flats. Think of them as the grown up version of your weekend shoe.

Gawking in awe at Spring prints, New Yorkers wonder when we’ll get the chance to brighten our wardrobe with botanical beauties. We won’t be able to live with ourselves come spring if we don’t find some way to incorporate florals into our wardrobe without looking like a 16-year old teenybopper with a propensity for Lisa Frank.
You have two options when it comes to florals: you can go the feminine route with flats or flatforms or you could add some edge to balance out the dainty dresses with combat boots. When it comes to accessorizing your florals play with prints but be careful because print on print can go terribly wrong (we don’t need you coming back crying to us because you made a fashion fail).

“Now through January 29, consumers have a chance to score customized lace plate boot accessories and a pair of Sorels, compete in a Polyvore Style Challenge, and get real-time updates from the festival” (Yahoo). Bringing the Sundance excitement to their Facebook fans, Sorel is giving users the exclusive opportunity to create custom lace plates using their ‘Decked Out. Laced Up.’ Facebook tab. As it they weren’t active enough in their social media endeavors, Sorel recently launched a Polyvore style challenge; “through SOREL’s Polyvore Facebook Tab, the boot brand asks consumers to create looks from a closet curated in collaboration with Alex Frank, style editor of The FADER, a music, culture and style publication. The top 10 consumer-created looks will win a pair of SOREL boots and one winner will receive boots plus a $300 gift card to shop the look” (Yahoo).

On January 18, 2012, Nike announced that the beloved Converse corporation will launch several collections of skate shoes in Spring 2012. As part of the Converse Skate Ambassador Collection, pro skaters Nick Trapasso, Anthony Pappalardo and Kenny Anderson will each have shoes released on February 1st, 2012 .
Partnering with the professional skaters was inevitable — Trapasso started his own company, Life Extension Skateboards, along with fellow skater Patrick Pasquale. “Trapasso’s signature shoe is called the CONS Trapasso Pro and will feature a multi-density sock liner and full memory foam collar that are designed to conform to the skater’s feet” (Yahoo). Trapasso’s Converse will be available in either suede or leather and either black and white or gray and cranberry, while Pasquale’s will be canvas or suede, available in brown and black or gray and red. Anderson’s skate shoes, the KA-ONE, will “come in black and red, red and parchment, parchment and white, black and white as well as black and parchment” (Yahoo).
With so many materials and colors to choose from, skaters are sure to do their next ollie in style (whatever an ollie is….).

So it’s no big deal or anything, but we’re having a BLOWOUT SALE… okay, maybe it is a big deal — so big that nearly 4,000 items are on sale. It may be time to warm your latte, turn off your cell for 2 hours, and get comfortable at your desk because you’ll be here a while (don’t forget to grab your credit card though).
While we’re only featuring 10 of our best selling sale items, nearly every brand in stock is on sale; that means styles and colors to fit any and all wardrobe needs. It may be boot season but in addition to snagging our sale boots, don’t forget to nab a sandal or two to store away for sunny days to come….it’ll be here sooner than you think (so maybe 2 months isn’t exactly SOON per-say but you catch our drift).

Brian Atwood is a favorite among many and for good reason; the Milan-based designer with American roots, design shoes that are the epitome of style. Since 2001, Brian Atwood has poured his creativity into amazingly chic women’s shoes. His style harnesses both modernism and glamour, combined with a raw sex appeal and impeccable construction.
The spring/resort 2012 collection follows his past collections in absolute fabulosity — you can find towering platforms, color-blocking, metallics, tribal prints, polka dots, cage details, fringe, and exotic skins. Pair some of the towering platforms with flare jeans to make a statement or spice up your little black dress with some of the gorgeous fringe strappy sandals. Brian Atwood’s spring collection will bring that “je ne say quois” to any outfit, as well as bring about that extreme confidence within, which only an amazing pair of shoes can do.

What do you get when you mix quirky British style with eco-friendly Brazilian shoes? Possibly the most interesting and unique collaboration in footwear history!
“The Queen of Punk Fashion”, Vivienne Westwood, has for decades been known for making “punk” mainstream. She has come a long way from being known as the designer who famously create killer shoes that caused supermodel Naomi Campbell to stumble on the runway almost two decades ago. You may know Westwood as the over-the-top couture designer of Carrie Bradshaw’s wedding gown in Sex & The City but now she’s working with shoe manufacturer, Melissa, to design funky, yet wearable shoes.
Melissa’s shoes are cruelty-free and are all made from synthetic materials like plastic and nylon, meaning there is no guilt accompanying wearing leather or suede. Celebrities like Melissa Auf der Mar go crazy for Melissa’s eco-friendly footwear (you should have seen her when I styled her in them!).
This season, the “Queen of Punk Fashion” joins forces with eco-chic Melissa’s shoes to create retro styles, similar to what strutted down the runways of designers like Prada, but more wearable and affordable.
No ones stumbling down the runway or the sidewalk in these killer heels!

On Thursday Jan. 19, Mark Fast, J.W. Anderson, Preen and Libertine announced their collaborations with Selfridges for ALDO Rise collections. The London Fashion Week foursome were tapped to put together their own ranges to sell in Selfridges’ Shoe Galleries in London with an exclusive pre-launch on Jan. 18th.
Purchasing the collection shows support ALDO Rise, ”a fashion week collaboration program, launched by ALDO to help increase awareness of upcoming designers and offer them support through their retail network and designer contacts” (OK!). As shown above, Mark Fast’s collection was inspired by “tribal and metallic glam” , featuring cut-out details, and retailing at £125. If the other three collaborative collections are as “spring chic” as Fast’s we’re sure you’ll support ALDO Rise as avidly as we do.
