Canvas Kicks: Part One

Wednesday, April 16th, 2014

After what felt like the longest winter ever, spring is finally here. Now while it still might be a little chilly out that doesn’t mean you should wait till it’s full on summer to start steppin’ your footwear game up. Picking out the perfect warm weather kicks can be a terrifying, unforgivable process. The last thing you want to do is end up with a lame pair that won’t do you, your wardrobe, or feet any justice. Don’t stress out to much though, we’ve got you covered.

In honor of warmer and much more enjoyable days ahead, we here at DNA Footwear have put together a small list of a few brands and their canvas constructed offerings.

To kick things off right, (no pun intended) we have to stick to the classics. Few pairs say summertime fly the way Converse All-Stars and a fresh pair of Purcell’s do. Once considered top of the line “performance” shoes, today both the All-Star and Purcell have stepped off their respective courts and become staple casual footwear pieces. Now, while both builds are without a doubt older than everyone wearing them, that doesn’t mean they’re incapable of turning a few heads this summer. Continuing to improve on aesthetics, while remaining true to the brands classic roots, Converse has made sure the shoes stay relevant making use of not only an impressive and wide selection of colors, but by implementing prints like camo, paisley, pin-stripes and many more.

Brand Crush: Wolverine 1K by Samantha Pleet spring styles

Monday, April 14th, 2014

Back in March one of our favorite fashion bloggers Toshiko Shek, the amazing creative force behind It’s Not Her, It’s Me, published a fabulous review of this spring’s must have stylish Swedish Hasbeens. We’re excited to announce that Toshiko is at it again by perfectly styling the Wolverine 1K Mile by Samantha Pleet spring collection in a new blog post this April.

This spring, Brooklyn based designer Samantha Pleet has partnered with Wolverine 1000 Mile for the fifth season in a row, giving us shoe fanatics yet again another breathless collection. In this newest collaboration spring staples like the Festival Closed Toe Slingback Sandal (featured on Toshiko above), the Picnic Low Heel Closed Toe Sandal and the Ceremony High Heeled Booties are all perfectly designed for these warm spring temperatures.

Thanks to Toshiko’s fabulous eye for styling, it’s easy to imagine adding any (or all) of Samantha Pleet’s newest designs to our closets.

The Top 5 Shoes to Wear at Coachella

Friday, April 11th, 2014

Whether you’re heading off this weekend to rage at Coachella, or simply enjoying the warm weather that has finally hit the east coast, DNA Footwear is here to offer our top 5 shoe picks for this upcoming spring concert season.

First up we have the Latigo Astro Hidden Wedge Huarache Bootie. This bootie is designed by New York native turned California babe Naomi Reid and fits perfectly into the festival lifestyle. Coachella, like all music festivals, is about nailing the boho chic look and there isn’t a better style than the Astro Wedge Huarache Bootie. In the beautiful Cognac color the booties will easily match your entire spring wardrobe from cutoff denim jeans to flowing maxi skirts.

Next in line is the At Large Ankle Strap Sandal by one of our favorite brands, BC Footwear. Just because Coachella takes place outside in the grass and the dirt doesn’t mean that you’re not a fashion forward girl at heart. Keep the glam in your outfit by paring these rose gold BC ankle strap sandals with your favorite dancing dress.

Number three on our list is a gladiator sandal by the Brooklyn inspired company BedStu. Gladiator style sandals are stylish anytime of the summer but the details on the Diona Gladiator Flat Ankle Strap Sandal set it apart during this music concert craze. The delicate ankle strap, soft leather soles and flower accents on this gladiator guaranties both comfort and fashion while you’re dancing the day and night away.

One of the best comeback stories of this spring fashion season has been the resurrection of the Birkenstock sandal. That’s right, the once hip, king of comfort has returned to the fashion scene just in time for this concert season. While the Birkenstock sandal is already boho-chic to begin with, this Thong Gizeh Sandal lends itself perfectly to the spring and summer weather.

While the previous four picks have all had an element of boho-chic style to them, nothing beats the Frye Reina Saddle Bootie when it comes to creating a stylish attitude in your wardrobe. Pair these coral beauties with a pair of ripped jean shorts and a black graphic tea for an outfit that will showcase your inner rock star.

PONY, A New York Original

Tuesday, April 8th, 2014

Don’t call it a comeback.

PONY is making sure summer 2014 belongs to the New York originals. Established on the Upper Eastside of Manhattan in the early 70’s, PONY’s been on a bit of a stateside hiatus, but in the 8 short months PONY’s been back home, the Product of New York line has launched a massive welcome back campaign on their old stomping grounds of NYC.

Taking complete advantage of the recent retro craze, PONY is taking a serious cool kid approach to the brand’s spring/summer 2014 collection, reaching deep into their throwback catalog and putting together some impressive colorways of MUST have retro offerings. Perfect examples of said retros are the leather constructed takes on the Topstar and Topstar high or the canvas built Slamdunk low. Each originally designed for the hard-wood, the street worthy kicks now boast premium constructions with a series of contrasting elements in the form of multiple PONY branding. This summer is for sure looking like a #summerofpony. What silhouettes are you guys feeling? Personally the Slamdunk is pretty much the truth in my opinion; so what PONY kicks are you coppin’ and rockin’ this summer?

Just In: Vans Summertime Collaborations

Tuesday, April 8th, 2014

No stranger to collaborative works, over the past decade Vans has teamed with some of the biggest names across all boards. As part of the brand’s spring offerings, Vans has decided to include a few tag-team efforts in their lineup.

Working alongside the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty of Animals (or ASPCA), Vans has created a two part collection dedicated to the animals in our lives. The first, a Sk8-Hi Slim rocks a dog printed quarter-panel with black suede toe and heel, paired alongside contrast white stitching. The second pair, a Vans Authentic, pays homage to our feline friends and features an allover kitty print paired with white laces.

Following the two piece ASPCA collection, the second Vans collab is a must have for any Beatles fan. Taking cues from the “Yellow Submarine” film and album, the collection includes four classic Vans (Sk8-Hi Reissue, Slip-On, Authentic, and Era) silhouettes, three of which make use of imagery directly inspired by specific parts of the movie, while the Authentic rocks an all-over “All You Need is Love” print.

Designer Spotlight: Vanessa Mooney X DV by Dolce Vita

Monday, February 24th, 2014

Coveted globally by taste-makers and celebrities like Vanessa Hudgens, Megan Fox, Emma Roberts and Lily Allen,  the eclectic, hand-made designs  by acclaimed jewellery designer and Hollywood-rebel, Vanessa Mooney, celebrate the free spirited, unexpected beauty of the boho-chic aesthetic that delights the eyes of passerby and wearers alike.

The LA based designer’s often intricate necklaces, bracelets, rings and pretty things inspire us to let go of tomorrow and soulfully embrace the sensuality and fullness of today with fingers and toes, ankles and wrists, and now thanks to her collaboration with DV by Dolce Vita, you can draw that inspiration up from the soles.

Here, at DNA Footwear, we are so pleased to carry two of our favorite styles of shoes from the Vanessa Mooney X DV by Dolce Vita Spring 2014 capsule collection: Avina and Atara. The Avina is a leather thong sandal, with gold belly dancing charms and leather sole; the Atara–a double leather ankle strap gladiator sandal with silver pyramid and smooth spiked studs also, crafted with a leather sole.

The casual versatility of the Avina thong sandal, easily rises to the occasion of dressier style elements. Celebrating that versatility, we orchestrated a truce between the femininity of dreamy florals and punk mysticism by pairing the jade green colored Avina with a sleek, flowery pencil skirt and a tank top emblazoned with a sugar skull. A pale pink bomber jacket keeps the chill away and the cool in play–as pastel hues and bomber jackets are hot trends for Spring 2014.

The rocker-chic-goddess aesthetic of the Atara gladiator sandal has inspired us to pair the tough, edgy sandal with the simple sweetness of a few key accessories and an unassuming cross strap, lace sundress. To brighten up the look with an air of playful sophistication, we paired these basic elements with a funky, mood-boosting, orange floral blazer that complements Atara‘s fierce design; blue accents and statement pieces bring the look effortlessly together.

Getaway Trends 2014 | Styling Ankle Strap Sandals with Pastels & Metallics Pt. 2

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

At DNA Footwear, we’ve been crazy about ankle strap sandals for a few weeks now.
Can you really blame us? We can hardly help it now that we have a parade of chic, strapped & cuffed new arrivals coming in for Spring. While it’s still too cold in New York City to pound the pavement in summery ankle strap sandals, a lush, tropical island is the perfect setting for sporting this coveted spring trend. Combined with creamy metallics, fresh florals, and magical mint, the only accessory ankle strap sandals truly need are sun kissed skin and a balmy breeze.

As promised in our previous post on styling ankle strap sandals with pastels and metallics, our Secret Garden set draws it’s inspiration from an earthier approach to incorporating pastels into our Spring ensembles.
Reminiscing of a garden by the sea, we brought together powdery turquoise with grounding peach florals and tan.

Secret Garden, french connection sandals, split wedge sandal, woven flat sandal, pointy toe flat, boho chic, mint leather, turquoise jewellery, dv by dolce vita sandals, geno woven flat sandal, honey leather, peach floral, floral shorts, floral purse, wide brim hat, getaway trends, spring 2014 trends, pastel trend, metallic trend, ankle strap sandals, style guide, dna footwear

To play up the boho-chic vibe we chose DV by Dolce Vitawoven pointy toe Geno ankle strap sandal in Honey Leather. The sleek, color blocked Abby split wedge espadrille in Mint by French Connection plays nice for day or night, pairing perfectly with the floral purse & shorts, just as well as with the mint leather pencil skirt and strapless swimsuit.
Muted metallics bring the look together: a shimmering understated cream camisole glams up the floral short and heightens the appeal of the front slit leather skirt; the coppery, wide brim straw hat adds intrigue, playing up your mystique with glamorous functionality–shading you from the sun as well as prying eyes mesmerized by your entrancing glow.

#ActiveDNA #OOTD | Sweat It Out In Style with Asics Onitsuka Tiger Sneakers

Friday, January 17th, 2014

The weekend workout is a challenge to fit in. Not because we don’t have time, but because it’s easy to get lazy after brunch–hehe!
After a week of staying active regularly for the #ActiveDNA challenge, I have found I have more motivation to wake earlier for a pre-brunch sweat sesh on a Saturday or Sunday when I’ve got a chic sporty outfit lined up the day before.
That’s why tomorrow, I will get up early and dress up in my fab sports gear, grab some lemon water and feast on fruits for breakfast, first thing.
That way, I’ll have the inspiration and the energy to take a brisk walk to my pre-brunch yoga class.

What do you think of tomorrow’s #ootd featuring the Ultimate 81 sneakers in Raspberry Blue by Asics Onitsuka Tiger?

Getaway Trends 2014 | Styling the Pastel Trend

Friday, January 17th, 2014

Winter days got you feeling grey?
Slather on the sunscreen and dig up your swimsuits, sunny days made for stunner shades are a trip to the tropics away!

When packing for your tropical escape, break out the mints, light pinks and powdered blues–nothing soothes the sole quite like stylish shoes in pastel hues.

Inspired by the surreal softness of the pastel color palette, designers like Jason Wu, Burberry & Prabal Gurung lit up their Spring 2014 runways with versatile applications of under-saturated hues, kicking off the pastel trend.

Taking a cue from these fashion gurus, we’ve curated a pastel inspired getaway guide to packing light, so it’s easy to go from day to nightTo recreate what we imagine a pastel breeze could be, we chose minty green to complement peachy corals and pastel pinks.

Pastel Breeze, getaway trends, pastel trend, spring 2014, ootd, outfit of the day, day to night, tropical escape, packing light, dnafootwear, bcbgeneration shoes, sam edelman gigi flats, bcbgeneration zahara heels, t-strap sandal, thong sandals, beach wear, beach party, resort 2014, dnastyle, chiffon, leather sandals

We picked up a chiffon printed short in a dreamy green and pink floral, then paired them with coral elements and mint green accessories. The Gigi Flat T-Strap Sandal in Light Green by Sam Edelman pulls the casual outfit together and complements the blush party dress, once you’re ready to slip your soles out of the chic & strappy pointy toe Zahara high heel sandal by BCBGeneration. Of course, the sleek Zahara ankle strap stiletto sandal, shown in Warm Sand (also available in Black) pairs phenomenally well with the shorts and crop top, bringing a casual ensemble way up a notch, effortlessly.

Mixing and matching is the key to easy breezy, on trend styling. For more fashion advice on styling with pastels, check back in to the DNA Footwear blog for the next post in our getaway series about ankle strap flats

In the meantime, peruse our COLOR BLOCK mood board on Pinterest to feast your eyes on colorful worlds of lovely pastel.

The #ActiveDNA Challenge | Getting Started & Staying Motivated to Achieve Your New Year’s Resolution

Friday, January 10th, 2014

dnafootwear, instagram contest, stay active, get fit, fitness, motivation, flexible, yoga, acrobat, stretch, health and beauty, asics onitsuka tiger sneakers, sneakers, boxing, pilates, break a sweat, #activedna, new year's resolution, fitspo, healthy lifestyle, working out, lose weight, burn calories, fat burning activities, inspiration, beast mode, feel good, be happy, be healthy, look good, feel good, beach body, summer body, love yourself, you have as many hours in a day as beyonce, stance socks

  Though the journey to implement your new year’s resolution to be fit is not easy,
the rewards of staying active are super motivating.

The #ActiveDNA challenge is a gratifying exercise that will help you make fitness a part of your lifestyle.
Though, that is a gift on its own, sharing photos and videos of your journey via Instagram, with friends and other participants will afford you the opportunity to motivate yourself and others, in addition to a chance to claim the grand prize–a pair of sneakers by Asics Onitsuka Tiger.

Today, I am sharing what has helped me get started with DNA Footwear‘s #ActiveDNA Challenge.
I do so in hopes that it will help you realize your new year’s resolution to stay active and win a fun pair of Asics Onitsuka Tiger sneakers that are sure to keep up with your fitness journey beyond this month, through the rest of the year. Let’s get started!

1. Embrace your self as you are.
It is important that you peacefully align yourself with who you are at this moment, accepting yourself fully. Allow yourself to feel excitement and anticipation about the changes you will make to transform into  the version of you that you aspire to work hard to be.

2. Determine the intention for your changes.
Setting an intention helps you keep your eyes on the prize. If your burning desire is to become more limber and improve your flexibility, that will be the motivating force to rise from the comfort of your bed so that you make time to stretch for 15 minutes before starting your day.

3. Remember, you have as many hours in a day as Beyonce–staying active is as easy as going about your day.
We don’t have time; we make time for the things most important to each of us. Evaluate your priorities and how they currently line up with your new year’s resolution to stay active and lead a healthy lifestyle. Are you doing small things, every day, that support the realization of your fitness goals? For example, did you know that stepping out of the elevator and taking the stairs will decrease your risk of heart disease by 62%? Let’s get to steppin’!
Other easy activities that help you stay active include, skipping the subway and
walking more; stretching with your pets; doing a few sets of jumping jacks, crunches and push ups while watching your favorite shows–believe it or not, watching TV this way burns calories at a rate of 72+ calories/hour depending on how intensely you go about your sets.

The following every day activities help you burn some extra calories:

  • 30 minutes of polishing your tables and knickknacks waxes off  80 calories
  • 30 minutes of ironing your clothes will smooth out 36 calories;
  • give your apartment a new paint job, and 3 hours later you’ve got yourself a great looking place and 1026 homeless calories;
  • tend to drop off your laundry every week? give your cleaners a break, this week, and  fold your own laundry to rack up a negative 72 calories for every half hour your spend folding;
  • volunteer 4 hours of down time to clean up around your neighborhood and trash 1800 calories
  • mop your floors for 30 minutes and ring out 153 calories
  • play poker (or any card game)3 hours in, we can’t guarantee you’ll win cash money, but you will surely lose 351 calories;
  • shovel snow for 30 minutes and melt 202.5 calories;
  • vacuum your rugs for 20 minutes and you’ve sucked 28 calories out of your system;
  • catch some Zzz’s–8 hours of sleep will permanently put 360 calories to bed.
  • fun fact: rumor has it that 30 minutes of locking lips for a steamy make out session melts more than your heart; swap 36 calories for a french kiss (;

Now, that you’re buzzing around, going about your day in the spirit of good health, ask yourself: are you making the time to let your inner beauty shine on the outside while you do all of that?

4. Make looking good a part of your routine.
It’s no surprise that looking good makes you feel good, and I guarantee you will have that much more energy and confidence when taking on the challenge to stay active, when you make time for beauty and self care. Maybe that means eating more fruits and veggies, or going to bed an hour earlier. That might even include, dressing up in ways that makes your feel good about yourself.

Quite possibly the most helpful thing I have done so far besides eating better and going to bed earlier, is picking up a swag pair of sneakers  that I can’t wait to wake up and put on every morning.
For me, the Unisex Mexico 66 sneakers  in Silver Blue by Asics Onitsuka Tiger, are doing the trick.
What do you think of my morning workout ensemble for day 2 of the #ActiveDNA challenge?

Work Out Swag: Day 2 of #ActiveDNA Challenge, motivation, ootd, work out gear, asics onitsuka tiger sneakers, dnafootwear, fitness, fitspiration, asics sneakers, healthy lifestyle, activedna
